Charlotte Ellen Nickerson Hood was born on August 9th, 1921 to Willis W. Nickerson and Grace Edna Field Nickerson in Brewer, Maine. Her father was a “prescription optician”. Her siblings Irma Virginia Nickerson Arnold (10 May 1917 – 25 Nov 2004) and Paul Field Nickerson (16 Jan 1926 – 3 May 2003) pre-deceased her. Charlotte grew up in and around Brewer, Maine. She attended Brewer High School, where she participated in many activities and began her lifelong love for the piano and music in general. She graduated from the University of Maine, Orono Maine in 1943. With the onset of World War II, Charlotte left Maine to explore the world and see what it had in store for herself. Moving south from Maine, Charlotte ultimately made it to Columbia, South Carolina. Charlotte met a dashing soldier, Charles Leonard Hood (5 Oct 1917 – 24 Jul 2007), who was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She married at 23 to this 27-year-old Tennessean on 6 October 1944. Charlotte and Charlie were longtime residents of Richmond, Virginia, where Charlotte taught elementary school and received a Master’s Degree from VCU. They finally moved to Virginia Beach where they lived in Westminster-Canterbury by the Bay. There 63-year-old marriage was adventure of travel, jaunts to their lakeside cabin in New Vineyard, Maine and focus on grand and great- grandchildren and world-wide visits to family and friends overseas. Charlotte is survived by her only child Ellen Lynne Hood Schone, her son-in-law Carl L. Schone, her grandson C. Lance Schone, his wife Heather A. Bensten Schone, her great-grandchildren Isabelle Amelie Schone, Liliana Celia Schone, Bensten Hood Gunder Schone, and Boeden Heath Redds Schone. Charlotte’s life was varied and full.
