Henry Roberts Hortenstine, Jr., 95, passed away Monday, November 12, 2018 at Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay. Hank was born November 11, 1926 in Pittsburgh, PA to Henry Roberts and Mary Abby Sutton Hortenstine. Hank was a graduate of the University of Virginia where he belonged to Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and lived on the Lawn. He worked for the Virginia Department of Health for over 30 years.
Hank enjoyed his dogs, sailing his Sunfish, bicycling, and his jazz music. He was a charter member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Richmond, VA, and taught Sunday School there. Hank enjoyed Toastmasters and his service as a Hospice volunteer.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Martha Gayle Hortenstine; daughter, Gayle Greene and her husband, John; son, Henry R. Hortenstine III (Chip) and his wife, Cathy; grandchildren, Abby and Justin Botts, Scott and Dani Greene, Kristen and Wesley Joyner, Henry Roberts IV (Hank) and Cassie Hortenstine; great-grandchildren, Anna and Mason Botts, Samuel Henry Greene and Spencer Joyner. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17 at Holy Trinity Chapel, Westminster Canterbury, 3100 Shore Drive, VA Beach, VA at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, P.O.
