Paul Leslie Bishop, 64, of Norfolk, VA died peacefully Wednesday evening, March 27, 2019, in Chesapeake, VA. He was born on May 5, 1954 in Portsmouth, VA to Elbert Muncie Bishop and the late Minnie Estelle Whitehurst Bishop. Paul graduated in 1972 from Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, VA. He then began his career in federal civil service with the Apprentice Program for Electronics Shop 67 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. In 1980 he took a position with NAVSEACENLANT where, until he retired in 2009, he provided worldwide support for the Phalanx Close-in Weapon System as an Electronics Technician.
Paul loved being on the water. In his earlier years he enjoyed waterskiing, surfing, and sailing catamarans. Later years found him competitively racing his 29’ sailboat, Leisure Seizure, and fishing.
On land Paul was an avid golfer, and could be found most days at Ocean View Golf Course, or driving around Tidewater, VA in his car with license plate ‘PD2PLAY’.
Paul is survived by his father Elbert Muncie Bishop of Coinjock, NC; his sister, Jackie Cross of Chesapeake, VA; his brother, Larry Bishop (Christine) of Virginia Beach, VA; nieces Kelly Barry (Howard), Carrie Cochran, and Meghan Bishop-Cunningham (Rory); nephews Kevin Cochran, and Michael Bishop; and 10 grandnieces and grandnephews. He is also survived by his close friend Celeste Hiller of Chesapeake, VA, his close friend Steve Holland of Buxton, NC, and many other family and friends.
On April 7, 2019 at 2 PM a memorial service will be held at H. D. Oliver Chapel, 1416 Cedar Rd. Chesapeake, VA 23322 after which family and friends are invited to a celebration of Paul’s life at the home of Celeste Hiller, 608 Saber Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23322 until 6:00 PM.
Memorial donations may be made in Paul’s honor to a charity of one’s choice.
